A Different Gospel for VBS?

"I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel - not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ." Galatians 1:6-7 (ESV)

Apparently some churches are turning to a different gospel - the "save the environment" gospel. Some even champion this in VBS.

Watch and be astonished and chagrined.

I'm all for not making more trash than we have to, recycling where it makes sense, and not cutting down every blasted tree or killing animals just for the heck of cutting or killing but come on people if you think we're trashing the earth just read what God says He's gonna do with it in 2 Peter 3. Elements melting with feverant heat doesn't sound all that eco-friendly to me.

I half expected this to be Lifeway. I'm glad I was wrong.

Joe,

If this had been from Lifeway, I think I would have made a motion at the next SBC Convention to jettison Lifeway altogether (that might not be such a bad idea anyway).

Yeah, if they're going to sell the Shack I'd say they're pretty much useless in my book (pun intended). A buddy of mine works in management there and he said he was livid when he found out that they were going to sell that book but the decision came from higher up than him.

The selling of "The Shack" really bothers me as well. Anything to make money, I guess. If they are going to sell that, they may as well start putting Osteen and Jakes on the shelves. Lifeway has really compromised.

Eric,

Just curious, but why is environmental stewardship such a bad thing to teach kids? Am I missing something? The connection to the Republican party perhaps? Now if it actually replaces the gospel that would be another story. Is that the case here?

Jeff,

The problem is that, in this case, it actually replaces the gospel.

Environmental stewardship is something we should all be concerned with, but not to the extent that it takes over primary teaching time in the church.

Eric,

If it replaces the gospel, then it must go - period.

Sad, I see this type of thing all too often.
