My Wife and Noel Piper

Noel Piper (John Piper's wife) has invited a series of guest writers to post on her blog in recognition of Black History Month.  Noel asked my wife Alice, who usually blogs here, to add to the series.  Alice has written a short post about her first experience with racism as a child.

She gave an open invitation for anybody to write a 400-word (or less) post on any topic related to African-American History month. I wrote my story and submitted it, never thinking that she would actually post it! She's very gracious in her e-mails. I'm glad she could use my post.

Eric,

I was raised in a community where our indigenous people were common. I had many friends, well into my teens, who were indigenous. Neither I or they recognized skin color, until a black power fellow from USA came and spoke to them.

My friends recognized skin color and withdrew their friendship. At that young age I thought I had done something wrong.

John,

What a terrible experience that must have been for you. I'm sorry to hear it.

Racism is such an ugly thing. I despise it most when it occurs in the church. It's still alive and well here in the South of the USA. I'm shocked that people who call themselves Christians can think less of others who God has created.
