Which 10 Books of the Bible Would You Want?

I'll admit up-front that this is silly, but I am curious about what you think.

Here's the scenario: you find yourself stranded on a deserted island. For some unknown reason, you are allowed to have 10, but only 10, books of the bible. You will be by yourself on the island (with presumably enough to eat and drink) for an undetermined period of time.

Which 10 books of the bible would you want? Which one would be your biggest regret not having?

I'm curious as to what you think. I'll let you know my 10 within a few days.

My ten are probably: Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, Proverbs, Matthew, John, Acts, Ephesians, Philippians, and Revelation. My regret is probably the book of Romans.

Thanks Caroline. Mine are similar to yours.

Hello Eric, I've linked from Arthur Sido.

Mine? Let's see. Ecclesiastes, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, Matthew, Genesis, Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Revelation, and... Acts. I guess.

The list might be different if I had somebody to interact with.

Genesis - God's plan for the world & his promise for a new people/world to come.

Exodus - God's salvation of His people

Leviticus - No other book better pictures His holiness.

Psalms - The pathway to developing a heart for God.

Proverbs - True wisdom applied

Isaiah - God's promise in the midst of God's judgment (plus, it seemed to be a really, really important book to the writers of the NT and I want to study it more in depth)

John - This was tough, as I love the synopics--but John gets us to the core message quicker (verse 1 actually) and takes us further.

Romans - The NT equivalent of a systematic theology book.

Ephesians - Pure Christology and pure Christian living together in one volume.

Philippians - This is Paul's joy letter, and I figure I would need a little cheering up now and again (solitary living on a island would probably be a little depressing now and again).

I don't think 10 would be enough, but here goes, Ruth, Ester, Psalms, James, Matthew, Daniel,John,Timothy 1 & 2 and Jonah. I can think of so many more I would like to have with me.

Tough call but here goes: Genesis, Exodus, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah, Matthew, John, Romans, Ephesians. Can we have any bonus picks?

Eric said...

Sonny,

Sorry, no bonus picks allowed. However, what book do you most regret leaving out?

I suppose it would be James...no, 1 John...no, Colossians...no, Philippians....no, 1 Peter....like I said, that's a very tough call, but I really do think it would be James.

Let's see, Pslams, Romans, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, I John, Hebrews, Genesis and Exodus. Maybe several years studying and memorizing these books would help me...can I also have some commentaries, too.

By the way, your opening picture of the snowy mountains is taken in Paonia Colorado (my hometown)...any connection to Paonia?

Dusty Chris,

I see you chose all 4 gospels. I was wondering if anyone would do that. It makes sense.

As for the picture of the mountains above, I just liked it. It seems like a very beautiful place. I had no idea it was from Colorado.

I figured if I was all alone on a deserted island, books that have to do with getting along with others (except I John) and relationships with others would be menaingless. So I choose the ones that build relationship with God (Psalms) and ones that I realize I need more intensive study. The gospels are just a basic thing for me...If I a believer I need to read through those once a week/month.

There's some method to my madness...
