In Case You Missed It...

A few days ago Russell Moore penned an excellent piece entitled 2 Chronicles 7:14 Isn’t About American Politics. It is one of the best articles I've read in quite a while on both American politics and biblical interpretation. This is a must read - especially for all culture warriors.

I disagree with the article. He carves a false dichotomy for politics that separates it from the rest of life as if there is no mingling and interweaving of world view and government. There is a natural overlap of politics and church and the spiritual life of each believer. Walking in wickedness applies to politics, church and every area of life. Repenting and seeking God's face applies to every area of life including politics. In America, we are the government, not just elected people. God does respond with destruction and discipline when his people are wicked. American believers are wicked in many ways they call godly. Church life is severely corrupted all the while called normal. Scripture is being twisted to lead believers to consume 84% of their giving to bless mostly themselves. Leaders lead with perpetual dependency rather than reproduction. God will judge this, at his appointed time now and later. This has nothing to do with prosperity gospel.

The biggest problem with preachers lecturing on this text is they will never repent of their own wickedness. Their minds are captivated by practicing a wicked system of church. Russel Moore may be one of them. I don't know him.

Idolatry in the OT is the same as in the NT. There is no covenant difference when rejecting God's instructions is involved.

Tim,

Thank you for your comment. Do you think II Chronicles 7:14 applies to the United States? If not, what passages in the New Testament might make better application to the USA?
