In modern evangelicalism, the answer given to the above question is almost always "worship." That sounds good, but the problem is that it is incorrect (according to the bible). So what is the purpose? One word: edification.
It's easy to point at traditional fellowships and make this point, as Lionel (rightly) does in his blog, but even home fellowships can loose sight of this. It's been my observation that occasionally one may cross the line from edification or even encouragement, to spiritual manipulation. Being zealous for the gifts and calling that God has placed on one, can be confused with trying to convince others that they should have the same focus in their walk. I think it's important to recognize that not all are called to the same focus of purpose. It's tempting for the evangelist to hammer those around him who don't evangelize, and think this is encouragement, for example. I think the goal is to encourage each one to become closer to Jesus, and closer to being the person the Spirit wants them to be.
Edification certainly is the key. I suppose we all need to take a close look at our own motivation in everything we say and do as the church gathers. If it isn't designed for edification, then we need shouldn't say it.
I guess you have made me a little biased, I have learned and been challenged more biblically and spiritually since having you as my pastor, my children and I are definitely going to miss you teaching us

Still learning,
