Such thinking as Arthur has placed in print excites me, as it embodies what I have taught about what practical discipleship means.
I'm also saddened when I remember that during my many years in leadership, only four men caught the vision of what I was teaching. One went on to be the pastor of a large church, three planted churches.
I thank God for them, but how I wish there were more.
My guess is that in the years to come (here in the USA) pragmatics will force men to become bi-vocational. How great it would be for them to do so out of conviction. We should hope and pray that it happens.
Praise God for your example, Eric, as one who has counted but dung the traditions of the past to obey God based only on His revelation. It is a sad thing to consider the household of faith unable to obey God's Word until they are no longer afford their men-driven substitutes.
My hope in all this is that more and more men begin to apply what they say they believe about the bible. If we really believe that the scriptures are authoritative and sufficient, then the scriptural model should naturally be enough. We must hope and pray that the tide increases of those who will be willing to reject man-made constructs in favor of God's plan for His church.
