A Southern Baptist from 1996 to 2010

Back in 1996 when we first moved to Georgia from New York we immediately looked for a church home. Our concern was finding a fellowship that believed and proclaimed the gospel. Although Alice and I had grown up in the Wesleyan denomination, we weren't concerned with remaining in that denomination. We were happy when we found a church family that believed what was most important to us - the gospel. The church happened to be Southern Baptist.

We have been Southern Baptists since that time. During this 14 years, we have been a part of six local SBC churches. I have attended a SBC seminary. We have served overseas as SBC missionaries. I have served as both a non-salaried and a salaried pastor in SBC churches.

Our time in the SBC has now come to an end. With my resignation from a salaried pastoral position, we have also left the SBC.

I've stated much about our reasoning in previous posts, so I won't belabor the point here. Let me simply say that I do not believe denominations are biblical; therefore, I won't be a part of one any longer.

Please let me also say what this doesn't mean. It doesn't mean that I will separate from, not work with, and/or not fellowship with Southern Baptists. They are my brothers and sisters in Christ and I look forward to proclaiming the gospel with them in various ways in the future.

I love the fact that Southern Baptists have never wavered on the truth of the gospel. Since it is Jesus Christ who unites us, we are one in Christ. Therefore, I anticipate much fellowship and service with Southern Baptists (and anyone else who claims the name of Christ as Lord and Savior) in the days and years ahead.

My time as a member of the SBC is over. My time working with Southern Baptists continues.
